  • Tank sealer for 34 RL tanks

    Hello
I looked inside my 34 RL tanks and there is minor rust along with silver metal. I was going to de-rust using vinegar , but I have a question about using a sealer. In the bottom of the oil tank section I saw some screen and a black substance holding the screen in place . Will using the Red coat or other sealer clog up the screen or reduce it's operation /funtion?

I need to see if I can get a photo of what I am trying to describe, and then figure out how to post it?

Also, there is a small oval in the bottom of the gas tank also it is about 1/8 " wide and about a 1/2" long. I ran a skinny tuck pointing trowel in it to clean out any debris and I was able to slide the entire blade in the opening , yet when I blow air in the gas and oil fillers and plug the output with my finger, no air comes out of this slot ?

Is the sealer necessary if the tanks clean up , or can you use zero weight or fogging oil to coat it in the off season
    Thanks for any responses

Having used Red Kote brand sealer on my VL tanks and being very pleased with the results, here's my input. I wouldn't bother with the vinegar clean out as the prep procedure (very specific) is very thorough for cleaning and etching before coating with the (polymer?) sealer. The sealer itself would most certainly clog up the screen you speak of as well as any other small holes or imperfections. That is what it was designed to do! I also would NOT coat the oil tank as you mentioned doing as the Tech support person at Red Kote advised against it when I asked him. He said only the gas tanks should be done .They were very helpful with any and all questions I had. Give them a call. Hope this helps. Smitty
