What is the plunger on top of trans used for ? Is it to help drain the trans

It's used to align the kicker gears. If you feel resistance when applying pressure to the kicker arm, you push the plunger with you foot to align the gears. Most people don't do this and you end up with f***ed up kicker gears.

The constant mesh kickstarter wasn't introduced on the Harley big twin gearbox until 1931, so the boxes before this had the 2134-16 starter gear 'adjuster' in the top of the case. If your starter gears got jammed, this drives a hardened tapered pin between the starter gears to reset them.
