    This is the frist v trans I have worked on were is the drain plug is it the nut in the front of the case it is very hard to get at if that’s it also what is the best oil to run in it

    The early 1930 VL gearboxes had the drain plug at the front, which is indeed very hard to get to, and was later moved to the bottom of the case. Harley originally recommended engine oil in the gearbox, which I translate as straight 50 weight oil. Today I use EP 80/90, which is a bit thicker, in the 3-speed gearboxes and 50 weight in the reverse and four speed boxes. It's also going to depend on your ambient temperature, with a New England old timer telling me you had to cut the oil with paraffin and pour a pan of hot water over the gearbox to start the bike on a cold winter morning. Gearbox is filled to the bottom of the filler neck, which is about 500 ml or one US pint.
