  • modern headlight old bike

I'm working on putting a modern 12v headlight in my WLA. Since I'm changing to 12v anyway, I figure I may as well see where I'm going. I'm using a swap meet $10 softtail headlight and stock WL wiring. No military lighting, yet.

Question: The Softtail headlights pigtail has a black wire grounded to bucket, a second black wire, white wire ,and yellow wire. I believe the yellow is for high beam.

My aftermarket toggle switch has black, red, yellow wires. I think the WL toggle switch is on/off switch. Just to turn the headlight on or off. I don't think my WL 3 wire wiring works for high and low beam. I could be wrong.
I'm thinking remove the black wire that is grounded to the bucket. Connect black to black and white wire from pigtail to red toggle switch wire.

    Does that sound right?

    Thanks All

My apologies to purists as this bike has parts of many different years and is a project. Cool bike but not a thoroughbred.

Aftermarket companies like CCI, Drag, J&P, V-Twin, ETC. sell new reflectors for your headlamp that use Halogen bulbs.

        Steve.

Are they bright enough to ride with??

Also who has one that does work and where did it come from???

Halogens are great to ride with but the vibrations on my VL kill them in about 6 rides. Probably 1,000 to 1500 kms. I use the low beam until it goes then move on to the high beam.

Do the 6V led's require a special reflector in a motolamp

Just to put it out there again. No one has answered the burning question. Do we have anyone how has actually installed and ridden with a 6 Volt LED and are they bright enough to ride with? A comparison to the old filament and halogen and where they fit in road ahead brightness to those would be good.

              Howdy sir,

You didn't mention what kind of charging system you'll be running that halogen with, a converted original generator or a Cycle Electric? I know nothing about WLA's, i.e., but if a converted 32E or similar, even if converted to 12V, the output current doesn't change just the voltage and being a bulb/reflector type, they don't like anything more than 35W on low beam. Many modern HD offerings can be 50W on low.

LED headlights. This could be a game changer for those of us on original 6V systems riding in DRL states. A fellow Vincent rider ordered a couple from the chaps below and loves it. You'll note they're covering the American/SAE spectrum now and I plan to have my Knuckle head and spotlights fitted thusly by the first Road Run in Florida. Even if the light pattern and strength only matches the original incandescent the best thing will be being able to run all three with impunity in an urban setting like (home) Bike Week as amperage draw drops dramatically as you see in the site's FAQ's.

I have been looking more into 6v LEDs since I recently decided to stay with a 6V 32E generator on my VL engine.

Here's an LED headlight I found that says it will work with 6V:

I'm several months (ok probably a year) away from actually trying it myself but for $28 it's worth experimenting before switching to 12v

Just saw this PRG. I'm running a new Cycle Electric 12V generator and Bosch Regulator. I definitely don't want to fry any electrics. This bike had zero electrics when I got it so I just went straight to 12 volt.

There is a Genuine H-D Service Bulletin on how to convert a 3 brush to a two brush. Check in the Shop Dope book.
