Getting ready to paint my 1934 VLD . Can anyone tell me if thr gas & oil filler necks are painted or masked ?

Just logged on here after a lay off, an' I'm surprised no one's given you the courtesy of a reply, 1970 XLCH. I'll give it a try:

You're asking, Like, "imagining your motorcycle was alive creature, was a svelte woman, perhaps, "Where on the body of the bike does the 'outer skin' stop and the 'mucous membrane' parts start," right?

I'd say you're gonna use a piece of masking tape in the usual way to keep fresh paint from going in your tank when you paint it, and that will cover the flat tops of your fuel filler necks, but barely go over, 'round the corner, and you stop the masking at a line before it goes down the side of the neck, the beautiful neck, because you want the paint on the metal up under the filler cap, not rust.

Hello there Sarge, long time no see... I left mine brass only because I liked the way it looked.

I use a old gas cap that has the top removed with just the inner part that goes against tank filler remaining that is cut down to the same diameter as the filler neck. It has a nut brazed to the center of it to hang the tank if needed. I put the modified cap on without a gasket. The brass tension ring built into the cap keeps it just elevated so that you get a smooth transition where the paint stops without the raw edge that removing tape leaves.

The factory paint went about halfway up the filler neck.
