  • 1937 ULH Bobber battery??

My old Bobber has been converted to 12 volt with one of the Cycle Electrics generators with the solid state regulator. All i seem to be able to source for a battery that will fit in the box is a tiny conventional lead acid or a horribly costly lithium.
While these do the job i'd love to upgrade to an AGM. Does anyone know of a company that makes a tall, AGM to fit this application?? I heard at one time someone made a tall (like the 6 volt) modern 12 volt for this. I ride this old girl a good bit, far and wide so a reliable battery is important. Help?!

    Warkshop!

If you have the Cycle Electrics's low voltage regulator, it is designed for a conventional battery in the hot environment of an oiltank.
The little 12N5.5a-3b batteries work well, and cheap enough to change every springtime.

They are a LOT cheaper than an armature, so over-extended use of any battery is a foolish bet.

As Cotten says, if you have the "low voltage" version, there are choices. Here is what I use on my machines, can be oriented in any position, and no acid spills. Usually last a couple of years at least.

Thanks everyone! I have using the wee 12 volt (and changing yearly) with no issues. The bike already had the gen/reg in place when purchased so i have no idea if it is a low voltage or not. I'd like to hope that since the set up has been performing well that it is. I'll investigate that further to see if i can identify this. Frankenstein,,,thanks for the tip on what you use (the UPS) battery,,,,i may even see about using one for my big UPS!
I very much appreciate everyone's input, enjoy the riding season!

If you have been using the small battery and not boiling it dry,it is probably the low output

2nd that opinion on boiling the battery dry. I've boiling them dry for years... I'm trying some new AGM batteries this year.

My brother extended his box lid screws and stacks 2 of the cheap batteries.2@ 5.5amps=11amps,,close enough to run high output without boiling dry

12 amps. Fits in oil tank.

Again, thanks for the great input. I must say the 12 amp battery suggested by Larry looks like a peach! A UPS unit i'd guess.

Larry! (and anyone else running these) i'm guessing you have run these Yuasa NP12-12FR batteries successfully,,,,looks like it would need to be mounted sitting on it's end. I know they are sealed but is the odd orientation a non issue. Think i'm going to go this route and am just trying to be sure. Looks like a great choice for the rigid frame HD, even made to resist high temps.

I've been using these batteries for several years. I have five in use now. They work fine on end. The Yuasa is built better than the Chinese products, and I believe worth the extra $. I don't fully understand the pie are square of battery science, I only know that this battery has the proper amperage and fits well in the oil tank.
