    1940 UL gas tanks

I was considering purchasing a set of 1940 big twin flatheads tanks from a friend. On inspection I noticed that the right tank had a threaded hole where the gas outlet nipple normally would be, while the left had the normal tank-through set up. I was concerned with the right tank, I'm not familiar with 1940 tanks. Is this more than likely a mismatched earlier tank ? There were emblems already attached so I didn't ask to remove them but probably will tomorrow... Or, did 1940 tanks have a removable nipple for the right tank?

My brother has a set of 41-46 BTSV tanks in the same condition. I just assumed someone had removed the flare fitting...
