  • Mating Star Hub to 19" VL Rims??

I’m looking for a little help. Has anyone laced star hubs to 19” VL rims? I’ve seen 18” rims with star hubs mounted on VLs (at Wheels Through Time). I have 19” VL rims and am considering lacing star hubs (for bearing configuration and longevity). The spokes off my VL rims will be too long since the star hub has an overall large diameter compared to the VL hubs. What spoke (length, throat length & degree of bend) and hub offset was used for the star hub/VL rim? I’ve looked at Buchanan’s site and there’s probably a solution there! I hope someone can help me eliminate a lot of trial & error!
    Thanks

The folks at Buchanens can do it. They have 'unpunched' rims that they can match to your hub and can custom make the spokes. A lot cheaper than you might thing. Can't say enough good things about working with Buchanens. Outstanding company.

VL rims have a standard drop center in them. Any spoke to lace a star hub to a standard 19" rim will fit. The spokes are 1/2" longer than stock spokes for 18" wheels. It is all dead simple and the spokes have been around forever. H-D even supplied them for WRs using 19" rims on stock 45 star hub rears.

Thank you Robbie, I'll look in my parts manuals for numbers and see what I can dig up.

The part number for 19" rear on a 45 racer with standard star hub is 43026-49R.

Thanks Robbie! After pouring through all my parts manuals last, I found I do not have much on the WRs. Again thanks. Is hub offset roughly the same compared to the two different style hubs? The VL & star hubs are close in spoke position/width (left to right, across the axle). On my 19" VL wheel, the offest for the non-splined side of the hub is roughly 0.67" out (above rim edge) and for the splined-side (less drum) is close to flush with the rim (0.06"). I ask because the VL hub is 3.298"W (dia. 3.494") vs. the star hub at 3.886"W (dia. 4.546") which equates to approx 1/2" spoke length difference. Thanks

The VL rim is the same width as an 18" rim as used on many H-Ds . The offset figure in the manual for 18" rims is the same offset for a 19" on a star hub. You are overthinking this, it is truly simple.

Thanks Robbie! I wondered if I was (my first attempt lacing up and wanting to do it right the first time).
