  • VL Springer How many springs.

    Hi all,

I am putting together a 34 VFD and have acquired a good set of forks complete. I have found that there are buffer springs in both the upper and lower springs and according to Steve's book there should only be buffer springs in the lower section and upper buffer springs were introduced for U models. The upper buffer springs are about 3 7/8 inches long and the lower ones about 4 3/16 inches.

Do I have a springer for fatties or were there some springers with two buffer springs and others with four?

Were upper buffer springs an option or fitted later by some owners for some reason?

For interest on my other VL which is a 35VD it also has both upper and lower buffer springs which were on the bike when I bought it in 1966.

There are no top secondary springs on the VL, but the upper springs do get thrashed and I can see why the inner springs were introduced on later models. Looks like you have the VL inner spring at the bottom and a later or 45 part at the top. If you are building a rider rather than a points bike then I'd sit tight.
