correct lock washers

Does anone know what lock washers are used on a 1929-1962 bicycle type kicker pedal. I know they are supposed to be the star type but internal or external and what size 4, 6, or 8.

Do you know why in my 1957 parts book it shows split lockwashers?
Did they switch sometime in the 50's.
