Hwy, Enthusiasts - I haven't received the '29 IMG_0752.JPGIMG_0762.jpgScreen Shot 2013-03-27 at 9.21.21 AM.jpgC yet - it's being shipped 2000 miles - but just talked to the owner. He said it apparently has a period-correct foot-shift adapter. I've seen these in pictures. does anybody know anything about these? Also, I found my parts book, and FYI the correct shift-gate isn't a double hole item, but rather one with one gas-cap filler hole and a second half-circle opening. I never happened across one like that - fits the period DL bikes as well.

I guess I'm in no big hurry for the parts. The bike came yesterday (Woo Hoo!!!) and there is the neatest home-engineered foot-shift gizmo with it. I saw a picture of one in the old hard-bound "Early Riders" book (pub by EasyRiders years ago). It seems as guys were making these in the old days. This thing is really well-made - heavy, works like a charm, and has a primitive "moustrap", a little smaller than the ones that came on the panheads of the '50's. I'm thinking I'll like having this, although some purists might think better of it.

Here are some pix I just took. There appears to be a stamp-sized remnant of a sticker on the "chromed" side of the ratchet. It appears to be formed using the clutch pedal bracket as the base. The square rod coming rearward out of the back extends or retracts as you work the heel-toe kick. It's very rigid and sturdy. The mousetrap's tran-side cable appears to route around the half-circle grooved guide, which turns freely. It seems to attach somewhere above the clutch basket on the frame downtube and a tab on the fore part of the rear fender.

That is a B&H shifter. It was made in the late '40s to mid '50s to adapt hand shift bikes to the "new" footshift style being made popular by the influx of British bikes. they were just one of several companies making such accessories. They came in versionsfor Big twin and 45.

Thanx for the prompt and informative response. I'll comb the meets for the original parts, but I'm definitely going to run it with this gizmo. I'm looking forward to riding the 'thumper'.

On the shift gate you might try Tom Fesser at Replicant Metals www.replicantmetals.com. I know he does the JD and VL ones and probably has ones for the RL's and DL's too. Don't forget the gland nuts that thread the gate to the filler bungs. If you pick up the Parts Listings for Harley Davidson Motorcycles 1930-1949 which should be avaliable at the local HD shop under vintage/antique literature you can see the parts and get parts numbers to reference in you searches.
