  • VL inner primary fitment help

I am installing the VL inner primary on trans. Steve, are you here?. My VL is a mix of parts. Two longer studs at left front of trans top are longer and inner primary bracket fits on them. Do nuts go on these longer studs next to trans cover prior to installation of inner primary or is there a spacer. Photos I have in Steve's book look like there is a spacer on the studs with no nuts. Also, the bracket on inner primary fits higher up on the front of the two longer studs. What is this extra height for, does a bracket for chainguard fit under the bracket on the front stud. Thanks!!

Hi Buster and we see the usual relentless tinkering by Harley with continuous engineering improvement over the VL years, which can make mix and match parts hard to fit. For 1930/31 we have two cast ears on the gearbox and three socketed holes at the rear of the left crankcase. A one piece chainguard clutch plate is screwed to the two gearbox lugs with four screws. Then a two piece inner primary is slotted top and bottom into the chainguard clutch plate, and overlapped so the middle crankcase hole and screw goes through both inner primary sections, plus one crankcase hole each at top and bottom.

Then Harley found rear chain breaks were busting off the front gearbox lug, so they took it off the gearbox case casting and revised the chainguard clutch plate for 1932. Now the chainguard clutch plate has a steel bracket at the front, held on with two longer studs at the front top of the gearbox, with a spacer underneath and just two screws on the rear cast gearbox lug. So far so good. Don't forget the spacer.

For 1934 Harley revised the outer primary with a drip sill along the bottom. This meant a new, less deep, lower inner primary for 1934-35. For 1936 the rear cast gearbox lug was also removed, with a one piece inner primary like the knuckleheads, and no chainguard clutch plate. The gearbox dust ring from 1920 was also revised to a one-year part. The outer primary is also technically one year for '36, as it has a screw through the top rear securing it to the inner primary. Harley also removed the middle crankcase securing hole in 1936, and nos cases will have this style.

In addition, we have several remanufacturers of inner and outer primaries, and these have always been a typical Harley tight fit. Check your parts first, do the work where no-one is watching, and judicious use of the rubber hammer should get it done for you.
