  • '38 UL correct parts finishes

What are the correct finishes for the #404-36 crankcase guard (skid plate) and the coil clamps #4160-28 (new#9980) front brake handlebar control cable clamp and #3393-37 (new#56626-37) spark coil control clamp. I've seen these parts both painted or parkerized, however I've never heard or read any thing to document what is correct for restoration.
    Thanks, Ron

The skid plate is black paint and both the clamps are parkerized as is the hardware that goes on them. Hope this helps, Bob L

The brake cable clamp on the handlebars is painted black. Skid plate is black. If you are referring to all of the hardware that mounts the coil to the seat post, all of that is parkerized, The spark coil control clamp that is on the front down tube of the frame is painted black and the one that goes on the cylinder base nut just behind the coil is parkerized.

Matt, I went hunting. You are right but I have the clamps in both painted and I got some parkerized with the military tag. Could it be possible that early were one and later the other? I never really gave this a thought. I have them parkerized on my 48 but it appears you are right. In old photos of the thirties they appear to be parkerized. I just put them on as I got them. Bob L

            Thanks, Ron
I've noticed that "some people" use of the dash-37 spark coil control clamp, intended for down on the frame downtube, as a substitute for the dash-28 (1st year for the ft. brake) front brake handlebar control cable clamp (through '39, I presume) -- a different part entirely, looking at postwar parts books drawings. It's different in the way it clamps the cable coil at the very top of it. They are almost identical, and one can easily substitute for the other one. But, for economy, were two dash-37 clamps used on each bike after 1939? Or what?
