  • Sidecar Tie bar fitment

    Hi, Guys

Starting final assembly of my 65 FL and test fitting the sidecar mounts before tightening up the engine and front exhaust.

All the mounts were in place when I got the bike, save for the Tie bar, which I've since located aftermarket. I have the book, as well as the "Sidecar Handbook", but can't tell from the drawings how that tie bar is supposed to be oriented in the right mount. The closest I can come to getting it to mount flush is with the flat on the big end facing back and slightly down (8 Oclock, looking at it from the right side), but it's still about 1/8" shy of flush. See Photo.

The mount accidentally went to the powder coater along with the frame, so I may just need to relieve a little somewhere, but I don't want to mess with it until I know how it's supposed to fit.

Any help, and or photos of the correct fitment appreciated!

P.S. the bike rolling chassis is on a lift, and the sidecar is in storage, so I can't just line them up and go from there at this time.

Anybody? Given the threads on the tiebar that end up on the inside of the bracket, and the size of the locknut that goes there, it sure looks like the tiebar should slide all the way into that bracket, but as stated, I don't want to grind on it without knowing for sure.

There must be a sidecar guy or two in here that can advise.

    Thanks in advance!

It needs to be flush with the mount casting and the flat on the back should lock in to keep it from rotating. The tie rod is common back to '36 so it fits just the same as on a rigid frame with welded in mounts. The left side is adjustable in order to get it set to the clamp without stressing the frame tubes and to allow for the manufacturing tolerance on the frames.

Thanks, Robbie! As expected re fitting flush into the mount. Time for a little massaging with the Dremel tool.
