  • 1907 H-D twin ?

I came across this old file. Probably common stuff, but always interesting to read old trade journal articles.

Thanks for the very interesting copy from your 1908 M-I article, Barry. When I see pictures, and text from that pioneer era of motorcycles, it's like getting a message from Outerspace. We're so removed from that ancient time (yet still connected) that any information is a real gem. Hope all is well in your world, Barry. Regards, Eric

Well said Eric! I would love to know more about this S. Lacy Crolius dude. It just seems so unimaginable , that first vee twin and winning a race and setting records with it and an article and photo as proof! What was his connection to the :"founding fathers" ? And was this him spying on the competition as shown here in my infamous panoramic? The photo appears to have been taken a year before Harley officially entered racing. I am still working on that Time Machine. IMG_0710.jpeg

I have a lot of info about our friend S.(Seymor) Lacey Crolius. Seems he started with HD around 1907. He went on to be HD's advertising manager starting in 1910 to 1919. I believe he and Walter Davidson were most responsible for making up HD's confusing early history. In 1910 while advertising manager for HD he started his own business building Waverley motorcycle motors which he eventually resigned from. He did a lot of racing for HD. If your interested I can pull more info from my files.

Great info ! I had 2 Waverley v twin engines one was NOS. Do you think that is him in the panoramic ? I thought that strap on whosever shoulder it is might be for a camera . It seems like Harley copied the Excelsior idea of riveted tanks the following year.
