How difficult is it to locate a Sturmy-Archer 3 speed rear hub? Is this unobtanium? Are they silly expensive?

Hey Paul. They can be found, but not often. Typcially they go for $1500US, maybe $2000.
Make sure that you get all the parts. Hub, drive belt rim (with the big straight spokes), shifter linkage, clutch pedal and linkage, etc.
Don't forget though, you have to modify the bike frame to fit it. The drive belt remains on the left side of the bike, but you have to cut and weld the ride side seat stay and axle stay to clear the dummy brake rim. Plus you have to move the brake pedal linkage to cross over to the right side. I have photos of all this, and can send them to you.
