  • Confused on VIN numbers

In an earlier post someone stated that triumph never put vin numbers on the downtube. Can someone please clarify this for me? I picked up a 1972 triumph and need to ID the frame and engine numbers. It's a mismatched mutt. Frame- T140VAH 24XXX and engine- TR6C EE 20XXX. Can someone tell me what I have here? Is there a website for Triumph ID's? Thanks

Triumph ALWAYS stamped their frames. If you heard otherwise you were misinformed. And the engine and frame numbers originally matched with the exception of the engine having a model number on earlier units. On your '72 they should be the same. There are lots of places for Triumph ID info on the web. Just google them like I just did!
The T140V means the frame is for a 750 Bonneville twin with 5 speed, your engine is a Tr6 650 4 speed.
Here is a basic one to help you.

      Dear hawghd1
According to all my books Your frame is for a 750 5 speed made A for Jan. H for 1973. The engine is a TR6 650 with high pipes Made E for May E for 1971. Hope this helps you out.

Dear All, if you think you've got a matching numbers bike, the British VMCC has the build records for most British bikes. They are at www.vmcc.net. For a fee you can get a certificate showing the entry for your bike in the build records, with frame and engine numbers plus accessories etc. as dispatched from the factory.
