Modern Oil for Excelsior Super X

The Super X manual calls for Valvoline Heavy or Gargoyle/Mobileoil BB in the oil tank. I’ve done some searching in the forum and on the wider internet and haven’t yet found any clear recommendations on a modern substitute. Any advice from Super X owners or mechanics would be appreciated. Not really looking for a debate on this brand vs that brand, but recommendations on type and weight; detergent/non-detergent; multi-grade/straight weight; etc. What are people using? If there is an existing thread on the forum that I’ve missed, I apologize, and please point me to it. Thanks!

'Ashless' is ideal for a "total-loss machine", even if its actually only a tired, tortured, war-horse panhead.

The dramatic differences in mileage/consumption was proof enough for me.

I have no explanation.

I used AeroShell in my total-loss 1928 Ariel on the last Cannonball. I had to install a new guide in Pierre SD, having nothing to do with the oil, so I had the head off there. The piston had no build-up of carbon.

The "100" number may be the viscosity in SUS notation (like H-D 105), it's shown as SAE 50.

60wt was recommended by a Big X owner, who is in a significantly warmer climate than us. Went with 50 wt (SAE).
