  • scoring standards

    Pete
When it comes to scoring deductions the amc does not have a
standard,it is too subjective.I feel this way bc I had 2 bikes
judged at jefferson by 2 different judging teams and the
deductions varied greatly. You know it was like 1 judge was
the pen happy professor and the other was from this planet.I
dont know if anyone has similar experences but the amc needs
    deduction standards.What do you think?

    JUDGEING STANDARDS

YA KNOW.......ITS THE BEST FOR THE MOST. WHEN THERE IS A QUESTION WE "USUALLY" HAVE KEVIN VALENTINE- AKA ASSISTANT CHEIF JUDGE- TO ASK HOW AND WHAT WE SHOULD DEDUCT FOR A CERTAIN POINT,OR NOT TO DEDUCT AT ALL....WE ALL DO ARE BEST AND ARE ONLY HUMAN-ALL MY PENCILS AT HOME STILL HAVE ERASERS BECAUSE I MAKE MISTAKES....BRING DOCUMENTATION TO PROVE YOUR POINT THAT YOU WANT TO MAKE AND THERE WILL BE LITTLE OR NO QUESTION.
IF YOUR SERIOUS ABOUT MAKING YOUR MOTORCYCLE THE WAY IT WAS.......YA JUST KEEP PUNCHIN TO YA GET IT RIGHT.....

Thank you for the feedback, sorry took so long to reply. When judges deduct points on restorations they should also be responsable for supplying refrence sources which represent
there decishion, otherwise there opinion could be questioned as heresay and not fact.

          Judging Index Cards...

Why not have Judging Index Cards made up with the Make/Model/Year of a particular motorcycle. On the card would be the correct info for that given bike. Each individual Chapter would receive a copy of the available cards to keep on file. Start with the most popular Makes/Models and go from there. Cards could be handed out to Field Judges to give them a 'Standard' that they can quickly compare the bike to thats being Judged. Even the least informed Member (like myself) could Judge any bike against its known Standard as shown on the Index cards. Owners of the motorcycles could get a copy of the Standards for their bikes Make/Model. While it wouldn't totally eliminate every questionable part/finish, it would eliminate any confusion on basic Standards of that particular Make/Model. I'm sure there's lots of Panhead, Knucklehead, Indian Chief, Triumph Thunderbird, BSA Rocket. etc. etc, enthusiasts that would gladly participate in submitting their expertise on their particular Make/Model bike. Eventually over time, even the oldest, obscure bikes would have its own Volume of acceptable Standards on file with the AMCA. This info could easily be shared thru our Web site so that any Member restoring for example, a 1965 Panhead, would know exactly what the Judging Standard is for that bike. Am I off on this?? Has this already been tried or have we something like this already set up?? ...(I apologize for my ignorance on all things Judging ahead of time)...... ..Hrdly-Dangrs

            Hi Hrdly:
Our judges have a pretty tough job. Making up cards for every possible combination of year and make would be a formidable task. One of the things I'd like to see happen, is have judging at main meets only, and have the various marque specialists on hand at those meets. If we can thus standardize, we can eliminate the step method of getting a senior.
Thats just personal opimion, but Kevin and I have discussed it. I appreciate your input.
Are yo going to Harmoney this year? You are a guy I would like to meet.
            Cheers,
            Pete Gagan
