matching numbers
on an Indian the numbers DO NOT have to match, however the engine and frame MUST be of the same year and model. the matching number thing is only so people can ask more money for the bike when they sell. it is a well known fact that the military and police would change a motor out and then rebuild it to use in the next bike that needed one

Numbers
So what if a pre- 60's Harley engine was swapped out because of damage, and the state it was swapped in warranted by law that a state issued VIN must be given to the cases. Is it too legal for judging? it is the same issue yet the AMCA for years has disqualified owners of such and choosen to refuse to accept "Green" block engines or dealer replacements.

non matching numbers
no matter what make the bike is the rule is the same.
the engine/frame must be the same year. if a pre 60's harley had a post 60's motor installed no matter what the numbers are if it does not match the original motor it will not pass judging. we have had early 40's indians with 47/48 motors and they also were DQ'ed
