iNDIAN ORIGINAL PRIMER COLOUR ?

Hope someone can help answer this one.
During paint restoration on late 30's Indians, has anyone noticed what colour the primer / undercoat would have been ?
I'm having a go at making some repo fenders look 'old' by rubbing through top coat to primer or bare metal, this on a 39 Chief in silver.

From what I read on the Kiwi Indian site, Indian painted right over bare metal and did not use primer.
