Paint from the 70's is most likely lacquer. As a general rule of thumb work from least aggressive cleaning methods toward more aggressive cleaning methods. Soap & water first then maybe a mild solvent like WD-40 or wax and grease removers then light abrasives like cleaner waxes or very light polishes then course compounds. Alcohol and paint solvents will destroy lacquer pretty quickly. I've had good luck with cleaner waxes as they contain a very light polish in them and wax to protect afterwards, just takes elbow grease.
