I am at the stage where I need to paint or powder coat the front leaf spring stack on my 101 Scout and looking for some info on the best way.

I am at the stage where I need to paint or powder coat the front leaf spring stack on my 101 Scout and looking for some info on the best way. How were these springs originally painted? Were they painted after the stack was assembled or individually before hand? Thanks, Tom
