  • Whats the best way to strip paint?

    Hi All,
What is the best way to strip paint off a frame. I was planning to brush on the stripper and then powerwash the paint off. My question is how to prevent the frame from flash rust until I can spray the primer on?

    Thanks!!!

Use a quality stripper. We use Martin Seynor Aircraft stripper from NAPA. It has a number, I think 6802. Great stuff! It is water soluble and you can use a pressure washer to get it off.

The frame will flash rust a bit, but this will be minor surface rusting. It will come right off with Scotchbrite Red and some lacquer thinner, which will make for great paint prep.

Depending on what you are using for primer, will depend on metal prep. If not an etch primer, you will need a surface prep, etc. Consult your paint dealer.

But the tiny bit of rust you will get while stripping won't be a problem.

    Cheers,

    Sirhr

There is a metal prep phosphate rust remover at home Depot in the house wash/paint thinner chemical area. It can help to derust parts and leaves the etched surface and phosphate coating. Combined with the red ScotchBrite you get a great metal ready for etch primer. Especially good on the surface texture of pits, castings, etc.

Thanks for the info! I will check out the phosphate rust remover.
I have used the Aircraft stripper before with good results. Funny thing though, on the back of my Aircraft Paint Stripper can it states do not use on aircraft.

            Good day!

Just yesterday I bought the cheapest can of paste paint stripper at Lowes; $9.00. I stripped the fork springs for my '16 Excelsior which were epoxy primered, with lacquer paint on top. Melted the paint with no problem.

                Good day!

The other day, I bought a can of Mixed Nuts. I swear to you all that it had a warning label that said "May Contain Nuts." On a can of Nuts. I told the cashier that "It BETTER contain nuts."

Nothing wrong about a COB. Good tip. Worth a try for sure.

Ospho- get it at any hardware store (cheaper than paint store) . a light green phosphoric acid that combines with the steel to provide a rust barrier. after dry, wipe down and prime. I have tanks a year old with only Ospho on them- no rust (in Florida!)
