Original 1965 Paint or not?

I know you can not see the correct color or texture on a computer screen. I have never seen the back side of an origonal 1965 FLH paint set so I dont know what the spray pattern should look like. Any "OPINION", photos or comments are welcome. Thanks

the original paint tanks i borrowed to set my stripes up .. the over spray on back of those look thesame to me as the borrowed originals

1965 did not have the vent between the tanks.

Chris, 65's DO have the crossover vent line....first year to us the non vented left side -65 cap.

The tanks on the bay are 65, i have 2 sets and an original set of Eaton caps (1vented 1 not). I would pay 2K for a set of original paint tanks rather than pant one of my sets. My 65 has 66 tanks on it but the frame and fenders are origonal paint.

I think I read that the owner doesn't claim that they're OP tanks, just 1965. The curvature of the paint separation in '65 was really tricky, and hard for painters to duplicate. I don't think whoever painted those tanks got it just right. Whether the '65 cross-over year tanks had or didn't have a cross-over pipe, I'll leave to the modern bike guys; it's not my era.

There appear to be MANY interpretations of that curvature under the tank badges:








But I think I lean towards the second one, above. But there is a 're-curve' to it. The original factory photos are best, of course.

The only set of 1965 5 gallon tanks I have ever owned did not have the vent in them.

I will check my org paint 65 to see it it has the vent, I also have a 66 op that I will look at just out of curiousity, thanks, Larry

There were more running production changes than you can shake a dipstick at.

My '65s all have 3½ tanks with shifter (and no crossover vents, of course.)
Can anyone post clear photos of the paint panels for those?

I have not had my tanks off for 5 or 6 years but I am pretty sure they do have the cross over vent line. Here are some shots from my photo gallery here.

These are orginal paint tanks. (as well as the fenders) A guy at Davenport a few years back had one of those gizmos that checks paint depth. In his opinion they were untouched as well. He seemed only interested in 65's for some reason.

Yes.
Bruces book is for 1937-1964 models. There is a little information on the '36 and '65 here and there but not all. Case is writing the book on the '36. Somebody else should write the book on the '65's.
