Police Radio "Kit"

Well, after almost 30 years I finally have just about all the major bits for a police radio for my UL. I still need a correct antenna and mount, a couple of condensers, and some of the rubber mount parts for the boxes. But I have a sample of those to replicate. I may have to actually get serious about this! I also need a luggage rack mount First-Aid Kit, I don't want to cut the legs off the one I have. The radio is in the boxes, and the contents are in the first aid kit. The generator is the correct 32E2-R type. The shielded plug wire covers are NOS.

Neat stuff Robbie! I don't know anything about this setup so perhaps you will tell me why the coil have 4 connection points? Also is the radio a tube type? My father was a part time TV/Radio repairman and I have a bunch of NOS tubes. If it is a tube type if you want to give me the tube part numbers I can look and see if I have any for spares.

Hi Steve, The coil upper connections are as stock, the two lower ones are for a connection on one side for radio noise suppression timer cable outer and the other for a capacitor to the same effect. There is also a capacitor on the generator on the screw visible near the one terminal The radio is indeed tube type.

This 1938 factory photo of a CHP bike has no shielded plug wires. I wonder why? I do see a resistor mounted to the coil.

Does the 42XA have the same shielded plug wires? I don't recall they were fitted with radios. You can see the same or similar shielded plug wires on a VL in the 1934 Police brochure.

No Steve, they are a bit different and set up to fit 14MM plugs on the XA. They were in anticipation of radios that never were used, like late WLAs with radio suppression that was redundant.

Both have brackets that carry the radio boxes a few inches lower than shown in the 1938 and 1940 pictures above.

My carrier is the later low one, it got the weight a bit lower on the bike. I really need an antenna bracket , it is a clamp on affair. Not sure if the radio would come to life though. I always though I would put a CB or something like it in the boxes just to make noise!

Chris, the wire suppressors are sleeves, a normal wire fits inside them. This is how they fit together and how they attach to the plugs.

The internals are in the boxes, no idea if any of it would work!

I understand that. The picture shows plug wires without the shielded sleeves.

Wrong year picture Chris, the shielded cable covers are a late '39 and up update in the parts book.
