Low mileage engine break-in

Gonna be ready to fire up my new rebuilt flathead motor soon. My question was about the break in. I know the common break in procedures for a new motor but I am going to have to treat this a bit differently. One recommendation is to not truely run the motor hard for about 1000 miles. But heres my problem. On an old flathead, it may take me 2-3 years of riding to reach that mileage. Any tips? Also is there anyone that makes a oil filter system for 45 flatheads? Thanks.

There's two trains of thought there atleast, those that say run em hard and them that say break em in easy. Both sides have folks that know way more than me, but the folks I know and respect the most - most experience, building engines. Told me to break em in easy, give em time to polish surfices and work in. They will reward you with long faithful service. I know guys who do both with good result's. Take it easy, how long did it take you to get it done? Why rush it now, take it easy and enjoy. What ever you do good luck and have fun with your 45 !

If you are building a bike for judging don't put a lot of miles on it. After you get your top award, which can be done in a year with some traveling, then ride the snot out of it. I have always found that it takes around 2,500 miles before a machine loosens up and runs strong. Your mileage may vary.

I’m one of those who believe you should break them in the same way you intend to ride them. But under no circumstance should you allow the engine to lug and avoid allowing it to just set and idle. Let it scream but don’t allow it to lug. -Steve
