  • transmission seal

Am I understanding it correctly that prior to 1965, transmission oil will leak between the input shaft and output shaft if the oil level is too high on a 4 speed? Also, is there an alternative method for removing and installing the main shaft seal without spending $200 on the Jims Seal Tool? Whoever installed mine last put it in crooked and I can’t get it removed.
    Thanks

There is no seal in hi gear until 1965 so yes they do tend to leak there when parked - especially when over full. There is an aftermarket seal called a Super Nut I think and they do help the situation. It basically put the seal in the sprocket nut outside the gear.

To remove the seal I welded a shank to a TEK screw and use a slide hammer puller.

Let us know how it works out. I've heard complaints of clearance issues with some clutch hubs ... Perry

Perry: I installed one on my 54FL 4 spd a coupla years back. No issues so far. I can see where in some cases there may be interference with the clutch hub on other transmission possibly. ...Joe

The 1964 and earlier clutch hub extends further up the taper of the mainshaft and these are the ones that sometimes interfer with the supernut.

Jerry, maybe I got lucky without realizing it. Possibly my hub is like you say, 1965 and later as it had the room when I checked at the time the Super Nut was installed. Good to know,,,thanks...Joe

There is no difference in clutch hubs. Isn't it the shaft thats longer in 65?

Yes, because of the aluminum primary. I've actually had more problems with super nuts clearing the seal in an aluminum primary than clearing the hub with the tin ones.

The lip on the back of the electric start clutch hub is not as thick as the kick start models.

The supernuts only work as a bandaid upon '65 and later main drive gears and clutchhubs. The original seal must be removed, as the lip of the nut's seal protrudes into the counterbore.
                      Earlier gears have no counterbore.

And, as was noted, the earlier clutch hubs have a protruding boss that bottoms out upon the thick nut.

To minimize leakage past the main drive gear bushing, it should be honed to minimum spec with a sprocket and spacer firmly torqued upon it, as the bore distorts significantly.

Chris you just wouldn't happen to have those dimensions, would ya. So I can make a note of which is which in the crates. Bob L

No I don't. But is is obvious to the eye when you have one of each in your hands. An electric start will work fine on a kicker but not vice versa.
