Is it possible to use '54 and up flywheels in place of the '41-'53 FL wheels ? Are the tapers the same, and can you use the pinion and sprocket shaft from the earlier wheels? I would assume the thrust surfaces of the sprocket and pinion sides are different but is it possible to machine them like a set of earlier wheels ? Just curious if this can be done.

55 and up flywheels have a different taper on the sprocket shaft side, and are not machined for endplay spacing. If you are having trouble finding a good set of wheels, I suggest new replacements from Truett and Osborn. They true up nicley, and are relatively inexpensive.Kyle Oanes AMCA # 3046

Koanes. I checked the Truett and Osborn site and that was very good advice. The T&O wheels are not much more that a set of originals, plus you would probably have to replace the crankpin, pinion and sprocket shafts anyways. I remember trying to true a cracked Shovel wheel and the expensive mess that turned into. Thanks for reminding me to do it right.Eric Smith
