  • Panhead Left Case Repair

Over the years I've seen advertisements for shops that specialize in substantial motor case repair. Unfortunately, I haven't seen any such advertisements for awhile.

I have a 1953 FLE that needs the left side cast-in roller race insert bored, sleeved and honed to stock I.D. The existing race has spun and damaged the cast-in steel insert, so I would send both cases to the machine shop so they could indicate the correct bore location of the left race using the pinion race location. Also, my preference would be to slightly chamfer the O.D. of the sleeve and braze a couple of small locations with a small amount of brass to ensure against future spinning..

I was in this business in my youth and I know how sensitive and sometimes fragile these sand castings are to this kind of work, so I'm really interested in a shop who knows Harley cases very well. Can anyone recommend such a company?

    Thanks,

      Bill,

Do you have an idea of how much damage has occurred to the cast in insert?
Would the cast in insert be able to be honed .010", .020", .030" to be cleaned up for the proper interference fit of a new oversized case race?
They make over sized case races and I've done it before is why I ask...
