  • Big Twin kicker problem

I am stumped by this problem and hoping someone can shed some light into my thick head.
The transmission on my 41 big twin is a relatively fresh build by a reputable builder. Shortly after build I experienced problems with the kicker. Generally on cold start, kicker worked fine. After riding the bike sometimes (not always) the kicker would spin through when trying to start. It seemed like the starter mainshaft gear (33350-36) was not engaging with the starter clutch (33381-39). Usually if I got off the bike and worked the kicker by hand I could get it to catch and start the bike.
Because of this problem, I pulled stater cover and inspected. I appeared that the starter clutch spring (33391-36) was somewhat "collapsed" so I replaced it with a used spring I had in my parts. Kicking problem persisted.
Therefore, I removed the starter cover again and inspected. The starter mainshaft gear seems to fit on the mainshaft fine; i.e. not too tight or too loose. The "side gears" on the starter mainshaft gear and the starter clutch appear fine and they mesh well. The starter crank gear (33350-36) is like new and the starter crank fits well in the bushings in the starter cover. I had a buddy that runs a bike shop in my area, look at those parts and he could not see anything "wrong," I put everything back together, including replacing the starter clutch spring with a new part. Test ride Monday indicates problem still persists.
I am not absolutely sure, but I think the problem tends to arise when the tranny is warmed up. When I left for the test ride, bike started first kick (after Primes) with no problem. When I stopped for a break on the ride, the problemed surfaced upon start up attempt. I had to, once again, mess with the starter crank by hand until I felt it "catch". When I got home and shut the bike off, the starter crank spun through easily, without engaging. The next morning, when it was cold, starter engaged as it should.
    Frustration persists as well!!!

It sounds like the sliding gear on the mainshaft is a bit too tight and when warm is expanding and binding on the shaft enough to prevent engagement.

Maybe I will try taking a little out of the bushing in the sliding mainshaft kicker gear, Robby. Lord knows it feels like I can assemble/disassemble what is necessary in my sleep.
      Thanks for input.

I agree with Rubone. The bushing is fit to tight to the main shaft. Run it on the horizontal hone to achieve proper clearance and that should fix it.
