  • Engine Shop near central PA

I could have sworn I asked this before, but cannot find anything, so apologies if this has already been answered...Looking for a machine shop in the area that does quality work on old engines...my 1964 needs an oversize hone of about .010 and fitted to pistons. Looking for a quality shop that knows the importance of original undamaged cylinders!
    Thanks

Little north of you but might want to check out Scott Palmer at Hillside Motorcycle and Machine in a little place called Munnsville NY

Few shops will hone your cylinders 10 over.

It’s not cost effective because it takes a lot of time and eats a lot of supplies to remove more than a couple thou by honing. You have to pay attention when honing and the operator is critical. wrestling cylinders is a workout for 45-60 minutes per cylinder to take out .006-.008. You have to stop often to check the stones and the bore, plus reversing. Failure to do so means lots more honing to correct it. And that’s provided your bore is actually square to flange so the hone follows a true centerline! Just cause it’s factory doesn’t mean it’s square.

not to mention the machine and supplies are very expensive. Honing stones and mandrel will make you cry. And you need multiple grit stones. Honing fluid is also eye popping in cost.

Hence, it’s just way too much compared to boring for many, many shops.

If you truly want them honed to size, just be prepared to carefully explain this and that you’ll except a bill that is a lot more than standard boring and fitting per cylinder.

Few motor builders like to, or will hone that much material, so many will say no and push you to bore.

the reason is it’s faster and easier to bore, but boring ten over is a pita. You’re really doing a .004 cut (.008 oversize) and then honing the last bit out. Hence most folks immediately go 20 for a bore and sell you on that. Again, shops will do it, but you’re going to need to have a detailed conversation.
