  • Harley 4 speed transmission sprocket nut

Would someone be able to tell me what is the pitch of the threads for the transmission sprocket nut on a 1948 Harley UL? Thank you!

    I'm gonna guess, SW,..

    Left Hand 1½"-24tpi.

(I know what its like when you can't get an answer...)

Thanks once again for your help Cotten. I plan to run a thread restoring file over the sprocket shaft.

You confuse me with 'shaft', Steve!

I measured the main drive 'gear', where the sprocket goes.

They are heat treated as hard as the hubs o' hell, and a cheap file will probably be wasted.

The nuts are intentionally softer, so please inspect that first.

Sorry for the confusion Cotton. Not being anything close to a mechanic I simplified things by calling it the sprocket shaft. It is of course the main drive gear. The sprocket nut will screw onto the main drive gear up to a point but starts to bind before it reaches the end of the threads. The sprocket nut supplied by the mainshaft spacer and seal kit by V-Twin binds worse than the sprocket nut I removed.I had a similar problem when trying to screw a NOS clutch hub nut onto the mainshaft as it would bind on the shaft. I used a Jawco thread restoring file on the shaft and the new clutch hub nut now smoothly screwed onto the shaft.

I measured to confirm and Cotton's guess is correct at
            1 1/2" - 24 TPI , left handed of course...
I've seen many new sprocket nuts run interference on the major/minor of there threads when being manufactured. This causes binding when threaded on by hand. Not sure why some feel compelled to do so?

              Compelled by greed, Duke!

Big catalog vendors move their 'seconds' first.

I have always wondered about the seconds...one particular company comes to mind first when it comes to peddling the seconds...

                  You mean, Duke,...

Like Tedd pushing scrap Colony manifolds as their own?

Ignore the park'd nuts, check out the spigots:

Several passes on the stone, and the wavy-gravy flange still didn't clean up,..

Are these the manifolds Tedd builds motors with?

I've seen exactly what you've shown in the image above. It took a lot passes to make it right. Makes me wonder how many people just simply bolt them on? Also as you mentioned, are their engines built with these uncorrected?

Tedd had to know they were junk, Folks.

PS: It would be different if they fixed them.

I frequently need to use lapping compound to smooth out the thread fitment of repop clutch hub nuts on oem mainshafts, as well as many other repop thread applications.
