  • 1925 scout transmission

Anybody have experience rebuilding these early scout transmissions with the tapered roller bearing on the clutch side? Has anybody got the spec for end play or has anybody converted it to the later ball bearing?

I have both a 27 and a 29 gearbox. The clutch side bearing is different on the two. The early scout is 13mm wise and the later scout is 17mm. The 101scout.org website has a good repair and overhaul manual for the 101 scout and they have a good write up on the clutch side bearing.

The only bearing I could fine that fit the early scout was here, https://www.antiquebike.se/en/pruduc...-24-par-1.html. I think it’s on sale on eBay as well.

For end play I used the 101 values which I don’t remember right now. I’ll be home this weekend and can look it up for you.

Most of the other parts are the same as the 101 and jerry Greer sells them.

    Hope that helps

Mine doesn't have that roller bearing in it mine has a tapered roller bearing like an automotive wheel hub. Do you know if your 27 has been converted?

Yes, mine originally had the roller bearings but it was a rusty mess and not usable. I could not find that roller bearing anywhere., so I went with the ball bearing above. I’ll warn you, I have zero miles on the rebuilt gearbox.

You might want to check this out, http://www.101scout.org/discussion/8268570. He said we’d be better off with a deep groove ball bearing, but I could not find one at 13mm wide. If you find one I’d love to know.

Ya I couldn't find one either so I thought about putting the newer bearing in it but it is awful big for the machined area so I didn't know if it would work. The only way I could think of doing it was to cut out the shoulder that race sits against and set up the main shaft like a later chief but it's all speculation.

the N5046X bearing is offset so you might have space to do that. I’m not sure how you’d hold the bearing in or keep it straight. If you come up with something let me know. I’d be interested in being the 2nd one to try.

The thought was putting the bearing against the retaining nut for straightness then setting the clutch basket depth with that nut, after that was set a guy could spot weld the nut or install a set screw just so it doesn't move then set up the back lash the same as a later chief. In essence the locked in retaining nut would work like the machined face on a later chief case. I have a messed up 26 case I think I'm going to try it on and see how it works I'll let you know
