Beautiful repair, Tom; absolutely first class. I never know what to charge people, so I would double whatever I would charge

That is a great looking repair. What did you use in the end and what was the flow temp.? Did you do anything to protect the nickel?

        Sorry Jim,..

But every time I let out a secret, some barnyard outfit starts offering it on some other forum.

The color suggests a soft silver solder.

attached pictures of a laser weld repair I had done on a Linkert M Bonn some time ago.

The laser welder near me mostly repairs injections molds and similar high precision tools with his welding machine. Most likely not the same stuff used by jewelers as these machines cost 100.000+ Euros.

What I like about this technology is that the surounding areas are absolutely not affected. It is for example possible to just weld the wear of the trottle disc in the carburetor housing of a Linkert or brass Schebler and then machine the hole back to standard size.

Cotten: as usual your repair looks perfect!!!!!!!

another repair I could do by laser welding was the repair of sprocket-splines on a 101 rear-hub: very practical, as the wheel did not have to be taken appart and the repair does not affact the bearing inside or the paint....

I'm sorry, but I have to wonder about a guy who asks a forum of people for advice, and then declines to share the answer with that forum. Think about it. Am I getting this wrong?

Kevin, I agree, it doesn't seem right.

Haven't I answered my share of questions over the years, Folks?

I've been burnt enough to learn to keep some cards close to my chest.
Remember when TEDD stole my pics like this one off of this forum (and others), and used them in his catalog as his own?

I'll jump in by first saying Happy New Year to everyone! Then I'll add Cotten's opening up of the topic brought to light several great potential solutions, the one Cotten used did a great job...but that doesn't mean some (or all) of the other ideas are not as good, maybe one or two of those ideas will work even better for you! So raising the question on the forum does a great service, even if we're not privy to every detail Cotten used to make the fix.

I had never heard of laser welding before this!

Nobody answered my last question, Folks.

                            How much should I charge?

I charge time & materials...that means all the time spent thinking about how to do it,stressing about it..especially the guys that bring you only the worst jobs to figure out & don't want to spend the money to "Do it right" & often time wasted looking for materials is lost.So somewhere in that group is my answer ! PS: I see shops that seem to make a killing...that aint us Cotton

                                I am fortunate, Duffey,

Most of my customers are the best on the planet.
(Only one stiff this year: A Cannonballer, of course.)

But living out of dumpsters, its really hard to get a grasp on what the real-life market will support.
"Time and Materials" only works if I charge for lost sleep. And then it would be a shock: I am already the most expensive, judging by eBay hacks and barnyard stars on tribal forums.

Although it was only half an answer, I'll divulge that I pre-heated on a Perfection.
