45 exhaust header

My book has me putting my exhaust headers and pipe on at the same time as the intake manifold. Keeping both lose before tightening the cylinders down for the final time. If I come back and do the exhaust later, are the headers not going to seal properly? I can see why it's important for the intake manifold to seat itself with the cyclinders so it's not under stress, but the exhaust...? Seems like you could replace headers and exhaust anytime.
