Use of Permatex

I am in the process of replacing gaskets on a 47 Chief. I would like to use a small bead of sealant on both sides of the paper gaskets. My reason? I see a few casting imperfections and I would like to seal the motor as best I can. There was some shellac on the motor during disassembly. Does anyone foresee a problem with a small bead?

That should be fine as long as we're not talking about the head gaskets. Your only concern is not to have excess RTV break off and get into the oil pump.

If you are using a 'bead' you are probably using too much sealant!

Use your fingertips or a small spatula (like an oil painter uses) and put a THIN film of sealant on each side of the gasket. A bead, even a tiny one, is actually a massive amount of sealant. And it will squish out and can cause problems.

If you coat each side of the gasket with a thin film of sealant it will be perfect.
