  • Cleaning Linkert Body & Bombsight

I am cleaning a M-74B for a '56 Pan project and wanted to ask what's the best way to clean the bore (after venturi is removed)? I've sprayed carb/choke cleaner and wiped the bore; however, the black film(?) remains. Is .008" brass wire brush advisable? I wanted to get some opinions before boogering up my body!

On another note: I've seen M-74B with bombsight venturies. What advantage does the bombsight venturi offer over a standard venturi? Besides looking very cool! Is there greater fuel atomization? Low or top end performance improved?

    Thanks in advance!
    William

    William!

I use tube-brushes with embedded abrasive nylon bristles, such as are marketed under brands like Nylox, Adalox, etc.

An OEM bombsight will not work with an M74B body, unless the body is greatly molested. Apparently there are "hybrid" venturies produced, but none have crossed my benches.

      Cotten,

Thanks for the reply & info. I've read your other posts on other forums with reference to Nylox & Adalox. I have googled both, looked on flea-bay and am coming up empty. I did find this website (http://www.weilercorp.com/wc670_catalog/37.pdf). A flat nylon brush you mount on a rod or long arbor. Are these similar to what you are using? Do you know of national or web-based company (have a link?) that sells the brushes you reference?

Regarding the bombsight, I stick with the stock venturi. What benefits does a bombsight provide over a stock venturi (for my education)?

      Thanks,
      William

        William!

Conventional "tube brushes" are usually spiral-wound and cylindrical, but anything can be made to work.
I doubt your brass brush would hurt much; Just take care around the delicate idle bleed holes/slot.

Bombsights and hybrids have always been subject to armchair-racing debate.
Two things are for certain: Bombsights were abandoned after just two or three production years, and original examples are nearly always shrunken on their outside diameter.

          Cotten,

Thanks. I know that idle slot is fragile and have seen numerous bodies where they are worn. I'll definitely start with nylon first!

"subject to armchair-racing debate" . . . . probably more lively with some bourbon on the rocks! Ha-ha!

          Thanks,
