Oh and he had to re-heat treat the whole mess too. I've got his invoice at the museum. I'll tell you what all he did to it next week.

I'd be interested to know exactly what Max did to the crank. I have two sport cranks that will need similar work. I'd also like some contact info for him.
    Thanks

        new plates

        Hi Louie,
I have just rebuilt my engine and clutch with the new corks and this is indeed a lot of work.
I do not know how it wil work because Ineed a few weeks to finish my bike and waiting for good weather to test drive.
However I have made a DXF or computer drawing of the clutchplates.
I can send you the file so you can upload the shape into a cutting machine to have some plates cut.

          sport clutch discs

It had about three sheets of newspaper for had gaskets, you could still read the words on the paper.
One problem that all Sport owners seem to have is with the clutch, I have been meaning to redesign the plates by having most of them bonded with material and therefore getting rid of them damn 132 discs. I was just wondering if you have given any thought to the clutch yet? I would be interested in some new discs if you are going to get some made up. Thanks.
          Hello Louie,
Maybe the clutch problem is solved, if not here could be one solution.
When I recently disassembled my engine I noted that my father had replaced (in the 1970ies)the clutch discs with custom made discs, made from Surflex wet clutch discs. They have worked very well. I am researching to try and see if I can find some more/new discs to do new ones by laser or watercutting the correct profile.

Were did you find that picture? I've never seen it before. We do tons of research before we dig into a restoration, but I've never seen that pic?? Thats a really good one!
It was purchased from Pohlman Studios when the H-D photo archives were there.

                Venus,
Could you please send me a copy of the DXF drawing on the clutch discs if it includes the discs' outer profile as well?
I wil ltry to have some new friction plates done and it would save alot of work to have it drawn up.

                Thanks
                regards

                    Good news..

I have been struggling to find the clutch discs that was modified and used on my sport. Just when I was about to give up I found the correct dimensioned Discs to modify!
I will have them water cut the outer profile and inner diameter from my dxf drawings. The friction discs are Italian made.

I thought I'd do a small batch and I would like to know if there is any interest from other sport owners, Louie, Denis?
I will only charge the real cost, beeing in sweden, it might be a little high though.. The modified discs could run about 25-35$ each+shipping.

Martin, I bought some cork material and punched out 132 disc and installed them about a month ago. After riding and adjusting the clutch a few times it is better but the jury is still out whether it will hold up for long. I was searching eBay for clutch discs and found some for British bikes that might work after modifying. Can you tell us what plates you are starting with? Thanks.

                          Hello Louie,

                          Ok I see, good job
I will make them from Sachs clutch discs from the brand Surflex. There are also alot of budget chinese made Sachs discs, but I thought I'll go with the Italian.

                          Cheers

                              Martin,
I found this Surflex 5 disk set part number S1147/B, but can't verify it's correct, is this what your starting with? Thanks.

                                Hello,

Sorry for the late reply. I just received the discs from the shop, but there was a minsunderstanding, the discs were "surflex" type and not the ones made by surflex..
I will try to reach Surflex again, they are very difficult to reach and I will have an Italian friend to help me. Maybe then I could get a correct partnumer and order directly from them.

                                Sorry.

                                Regards
