  • Field coil wrapping

Does anyone know what tape I should use to rewrap a field coil for an HD generator?

The clearance between the field coils and the armature are pretty close, I don't think tape would be the prefered method.
Insulating varnish or paint is what I would use. Try GE glyptal insulating paint or Dolphs insulating paint either one should work well for the job.
BTW I believe either one of these works well for sealing the inside of those porous old aluminum cases. Indian painted the inside of their cases in the '40's.

Use Scotch 27 tape, 1/2" wide. Each wrap should overlap the prior wrap by one-half. It's available through MCM Electronics.
Field coils HAVE to be wrapped to hold the windings together. The crucial clearance is between the pole piece and the armature. The thickness of the tape does not affect the clearance since the pole piece fits firmly to the inside of the frame.
