    1966 FLH turn signal help

    I have an issue with my left hand turn signals. When selected, the relay activates rapidly and neither front, rear or indicator light illuminate on left side. I've tested all bulbs, used deoxit on all connections and assured all grounds are good. This has been a problem with the bike for a long time. At random times the left blinkers will work......The right side operates normally.

    Before I start digging in further, does anyone have any advice on where to start or what to look for?

    Try doing a continuity test with the bulbs in the sockets. I would disconnect the ground and positive where they begin and check everything. I’m not familiar with the wiring but I’m assuming if both are out there’s a common problem.

      Is the flasher relay two pole or three pole? Rapid clicking without lights sounds like a short causing the flasher to cycle rapidly trying to reset. Then intermittently the short is open and the signals work.

          Ed,

          I would recommend performing these tests:

          1) Test for applied voltage at the left turn signal switch with a voltmeter. If the correct applied voltage is present, move onto test 2.

          2) Measure across the left turn signal switch when activated to diagnose wether there is any voltage drop present. If an acceptable voltage drop is measured, move onto test 3.

          3) Measure on the left turn signal switch output wire to the input terminal at the left turn signal bulb socket when activated. Do this on the front signal wire and the rear signal wire. This again is a voltage drop test, if the readings are acceptable, move onto test 4.

          4) Test for applied voltage at the input terminal of each turn signal socket ( Front and Rear light sockets). If correct applied voltage is present, move onto test 5.

          5) Measure after the load (Ground side terminal of the light bulb socket) for any voltage present after the load (light bulb).
          If any voltage is present, repair the bulb, ground terminal, ground wire, etc...

          These tests performed accurately will locate the issue at hand. Please feel free to supply test results and any questions that may arise.
