In the AMCA Library there is a 1939 Riders Instruction Book section on Ignition timing stars page 23:
"IGNITION TIMING
Models 339, 539, and 639 (Distributor or Magneto Ignition)
Ignition timing should be set so that the breaker points open when the rear cylinder piston is coming up on the
compression stroke and the piston is at a certain distance before top dead center. These distances are as follows:
Model 639 (Standard) 3/8" Bonneville 5/8"
Model 339 (Standard) 1/2" Bonneville 5/8"
Model 539 7/16"
Be sure the breaker point gap is adjusted to .020" on distributor models and .015" on magneto models.
All ignition timing must be done with either distributor advance arm or magneto advance arm IN THE ADVANCED
POSITION. The advance arm on the distributor is advanced when the arm is pushed toward the motor and on the
magneto models when the magneto advance arm is pushed down as far as it will go"
It goes on from there for situations where distributor has been removed or magneto has been removed.
Hope this helps get you started on the right path.

Are you working with an RM, Marty?
I can email you .pdfs for that if you are...
And I'll have an RM at Davenport if anybody needs one!
Hope to see everyone there at my usual spot, opposite the little white schoolhouse 'museum',
