How to "motor" a Harley generator?

Can anyone explain to me how to "motor" a Harley Davidson model 32E generator.

Attach a jumper from the negative post of the battery to the body of the generator (I usually clip it into the screw hole where the cover mounts). Attach a jumper from battery positive to the relay terminal. Give the gear a twist in the direction of rotation (counter clockwise when viewed from the drive end) and it should motor. If you have to fight the gear or it refuses to budge, you've got the regulating field coils leads hooked up backwards. Now jumper the switch terminal to the relay terminal. If should continue motoring. If it stops dead in it's tracks you've got the shunt field coil leads reversed ... Perry
