        Hi Kevin.
        I just found the motherload for explaining how our gennys and regulators work! It's the "Maintenance and operation of autolite electrical equipment" manual. I've attached a copy of it and highlighted the points that I think are relevant to us vintage bike nuts. It also explains how a 2 stage voltage regulator works. I've also highlighted info on the Indian generators that I saw quoted in one of the Stan Jessup pages.

        The autolite manual also tells you how to adjust the gennys and regulators. All the info is there if you guys can interpret it. I can give you a hand if needed. I know Indian used autolite. Did Harley also use autolite? If so, it would be useful if the Harley (and Indian) guys could let me know what sort of genny and cutout/regulator they have on their bikes. I can then highlight the adjustment data in the manual for all of the bikes that we own.

        Would anyone be interested in having me do the checks and adjustments on your gennys and cutouts/regulators? I would have to get a fair amount of them to do before I could justify spending the money on a test setup. The only problem I can see is that shipping costs may be high to Australia ($50 from the USA?). It might be cheaper to just send the cutout or regulator for me to check and adjust (less weight). I also have a growler so I could check your armature if shipping is not too much.
        I guess I would charge say $50 to check the cutout or regulator and $50 to adjust it. $50 to check the armature windings with growler and $50 to check commutator on armature, rounding in lathe if required. Does that sound fair?
        I don't know how to rewind the gennys armature or the cutout/regulator windings, but could maybe learn or source it out to someone.

        Anyway, if people could let me know there motorcycle make, model, year, genny make and model number, and cutout/regulator make and model number, that would be a great start to our reference database, something that everyone can use.         WTF? I just found out that the autolite manual is too large to attach. It's a 3.91Mbyte pdf file, can only upload a 97Kbyte pdf file. Does anyone know how to get around this?

              Make sure someone hasn't inadvertently installed 12 volt bulbs in place of 6 volt. Some of the miniature incandescent bulbs with miniature bayonet base and double contact bayonet base are identical except for the voltage. Check McMaster-Carr, njsales@mcmaster.com for a good bulb selection.
