  • 6V Delco-Remy Horn, 6-Bolt Question

I disassembled my 6V Delco-Remy, 6-Bolt horn in an attempt to clean it up. I wanted to ask is there a thin paper gasket that goes between the back shell and the diaphragm or is it metal against metal?
    Thanks,
    William

as far as I know, it's metal to metal cinched down by the carriage bolts.

Thanks Len, My horn had a black soot/rust(?) between and I just wondered if this residue of a former paper gasket.

They have a real thin layer of paper but most of the time it is non reusable. Jerry

Thanks Jerry, I can certainly make one. I was wondering if necessary as the horn operates without it - but then again Delco put one there! Thanks

Read the instructions on horn adjustment in Palmers book. His new boook is going to have clearer, more detailed instructions.

It can't be necessary because I have never put a gasket in there and the horns I have worked on always worked without one. There must have been a reason though. If I had known there was supposed to be one I would have probably made one.

I guess I'll have to fork over $300-$500 for Bruce's newest out-of-print edition to find out. I did read my '94 edition of Bruce's book (before posting my question) and saw no reference to a gasket in any of the horn descriptions, horn repair or adjustment sections (8 pages are dedicated to horns). I wondered, so I asked. I'm leaning towards "no" gasket until proven guilty. Thank goodness this horn is for a daily rider!

I don't think the latest palmer book you mentioned would have any more info on horns than the 94 issue you say you already have. Save your money for the new book that is supposedly coming out within the year.

Great link Bruce, thanks. I saw this link earlier while searching the archives and there's no mention of a gasket there either. Painting both contact surfaces would prevent rusting (not the whole inside of the diaphragm) as a paper thin gasket. Time to experiment!

I think the paper was probably just a seal which I doubt worked very good. Lack of it might only affect the adjustment which is easily rectified.

Mine had a very thin paper gasket between diaphragm and body.

I don't want to hijack the thread, but is there any info or website for more info on Bruce Palmers book?
