32e Field Coils

I have a few 32e field coils that are laying loose in a box of parts. Assuming they are good how do I tell the shunt field coil from a regulating field coil.

Take your ohm meter. Regulating coils should read a little over 3 ohms (3.2 is typical) and shunt coils should read a little over 7 ohms (7.3 is typical). As an aside, the factory service manual tells how to test the coils using an ammeter (presumably because back in the 30's and 40's ohmmeters were uncommon?). To get a ballpark ohm value from the amps value use Ohm's law. The book says regulating coils pull 1.4 to 1.9 amps. Picking the midrange value of 1.65 gives 6volts/1.65amps = 3.6ohms. Similarly, the book says the shunt pulls .6 to 1.0 amp, midrange is .8 so 6/.8 = 7.5ohms ... Perry
