I used a heavy duty furniture clamp to compress the springs when restoring my 1940 front end.Step 2.jpg

That's a bar clamp the same thing I use, I'm a retired carpenter.

Here is an easy to make and a breeze to use compressor. 1 fork rocker, 45" or Big Twin, welded to an old fork tube. Slip it on the studs, lift it up and screw on the top nuts.
