    Speedometer cable

I need to have a speedometer cable built for a Stewart Warner speedometer. Really all I need is someone that can square the end of the cable I have. This is not a standard length cable.

    Anybody?

    Jerry,

I seem to recall that decades ago, I replaced the cable for my 39. I went to the auto parts store and got a speedo cable kit. It consisted of the cable, with one end pressed square and a loose piece for the other end, maybe aluminum. The other end was bare and it was quite long. Simply cut it to length, slip on the second square ended fitting and crimp it in place. It's still going. Not sure if you can still get those though.....

Smithworks in Iowa does speedo work, I'm sure he could make one for you. Let me know and I'll dig his card out. He bought all of Terry Marsh's stuff.

Find a local speedometer shop that still works on mechanical speedometers. They should be able to take care of that for you. I've had several made for a range of Harleys by a local shop not too far away. Twice they made them while I waited!
      Hope that helps.

Sadly the 3 in my area are all gone.

I used to build custom Tachometer cables for my strokers. Cut a cable blank, weld the end of it so it cannot unwind, carefully grind four flats on the outer diameter, done! The cable is the same size as a regular speedo cable.
Gene's option is good if you can find an old style universal cable inner.
Dealers and rebuilders used a swaging tool.to make the flats. They show up on eBay and other sources. They are used in a press or even a large vise. They still weld the end of the cut off cable.
