I am located in Pennsylvania. There is a sportster in Michigan that I would like to buy, but the title has been lost for it. The motorcycle belong to a fella who recently passed away and is now in possession of his brother. What steps would I need to do to get a title in Pennsylvania for this motorcycle?

I had a friend (passed away now) with a repair shop that would put a mechanic’s lien on bikes for me and then get a new title for them. Here in Md. there’s a legal avenue but it’s costly and takes a lot of time and effort. I’m sure Pa has a legal avenue also. There’s also companies like Saints that get titles in their state then transfer it to you and you can then title it in your state. Vermont, New York and Maine have transferable registrations that are easy if you know anyone living in those states.

My first attempt would be to see if the seller can get a replacement title through MI DOT. Typically only the owner can apply for a duplicate but the brother can check into the process when owner is deceased. If he can get a duplicate, it will be a lot easier.
If that's not an option, call a well established/experienced notary service in PA and ask them what the process is. I wouldn't buy it until you know how much its going to cost to get a title as that should be a negotiating factor in purchase price.Jason Zerbini

Mark, i would request that the brother deal with the title since you are purchasing the sportster from him. In Michigan, the Secretary of State is a lot more forgiving than most States. It will be a simple transaction after that.
