  • 1946 Chief stud removal

Asking for any help and suggestions on how to remove the kick starter crank stud from the frame on my 46 Chief. Machine is assembled and painted so my last resort would be to use an oxy/acetylene torch. I have the seat post removed and have been soaking the stud for several days. So far I have not been able to get it to move. All suggestions and experiences would be appreciated. Thanks

There are a couple short threads on this, you can search the Chief topic and here's a link to one from '23 that also has a couple links:

I think if you're going to really wail on it you should follow the advice to support the seat post casting and tubing. Good luck!

      Good Read/Review Harry. NICE search.
Was reading the option of drilling and taping the kicker stud and using a slap hammer.
Having tires deflated and on side stand or blocks with wheel off the ground might help so your energy is concentrated to the stud and not dissipated.

Thanks to both Harry and Paul. I will try to get to the link and read it. Appreciate both of you for responding.

You need something between frame and immovable object or you will not get the result of hammering. A serious air hammer would help.

Don't forget to use a reasonable amount of heat. it's an interference fit. I install mine with Loctite 609. The heat will de-activate any retainer substance that might already be there.
